Stanley Huffty once said: “It’s not the position that makes the leader; it’s the leader that makes the position”.

I am sure that most of you would agree with that statement.

The fact is that leadership is misunderstood.  People often think that those with fancy title or a given executive position are leaders.  For some that may be true, but for the grand majority, not so much.

In true, authentic leadership, titles carry no value.  Leadership in earned.

But how?

We need to look at several factors…

  • character – who they are
  • relationships – who they know
  • knowledge – what they know
  • intuition – what they feel
  • experience – where they’ve been
  • past success  – what they’ve done
  • ability – what they can do

At the end of the day – Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less.

This my friends, is what my coach John Maxwell calls the Law of Influence.

I challenge you think about what you usually rely upon most to persuade people to follow you.  Rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 for each of the factors above.  Then brainstorm on how you can better utilize the ones with low scores.

Have fun!

To your success,

Jose
