Starting the week with some teaching…

One of the very first lessons I learned about leadership was the Law of the Lid and is one of my favorites.  It is the first law in John Maxwell’s book The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership.  In this book, John teaches  what he has found to be the laws that leaders live by.  If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend this book.

Back to the law…

The law states: “Leadership ability is the lid that determines a person’s level of effectiveness.”

In other words… how well you lead, determines how successful you are.

The law of the lid made me realized that if I didn’t learn how to lead, there was going to be a limit in my success – regardless of how dedicated to success I was.

Being successful does not mean you are a good leader.

To give you an example…  On a scale of 1 to 10…  if you consider your dedication to success to be a 7, but your leadership ability is a 1, then your effectiveness as a leader will remain low – regardless how much you are focused on succedding.

It is important to note that this not only applies personally, but expands to your organization, your household, your environment, etc.

Following the example, say you increase your leadership ability to a 5.  You have increased your effectiveness 500%!

Thats because leadership multiplies.

Here is a simple illustration to drive the point.

Now you have two choices:

A. Keep your leadership lip at the same level.  You will continue to work hard but getting the same results.

or

B.  Increase your leadership lid and get closer to fulfilling your potential.  You will also continue to work hard, but you will multiply your level of effectiveness and maximize your impact.

Which one do you choose?

I really hope you choose B.

Now you might be asking yourself how do you do it? How do you increase leadership ability?

Eventhough there are many ways you can increase your leadership lid – it’s actually quite simple.

The one that has been more effective for me has been to read books on leadership, and APPLY their lessons.

If you don’t know which one to get first, then pick up The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership.  Thats what I did about a decade ago.

I guarantee that if you commit to raising your lid, you will start tapping into your infinite potential.

To your success,

Jose
